“Ranches being established to solve Fulani Menace” – President Akufo-Addo

According to the President, “everybody in this country has been very disturbed by the activities of ‘Fulani herdsmen’. We hear about the fights that have been going in different parts of the country Ashanti, Volta Region, Eastern Region. They are very disturbing. Therefore, finding a solution is one of the big concerns of my government.”<br />
<br />
President Akufo-Addo made this known on Wednesday 14th March, 2018, when a delegation from the National Council of Fulani Chiefs in Ghana paid a courtesy call on him at the Flagstaff House, in Accra.<br />
<br />
Making reference to the work undertaken by the 2nd President of the 4th Republic, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor, and his government, in resolving the issue of the herdsmen, President Akufo-Addo lamented the discontinuation of the work by successive governments.<br />
<br />
“But, we (NPP) are back, and we are determined to find a solution. We want to have a solution that will protect everybody, the herdsmen, their cattle and the communities in which they work. Because, if we do not have that understanding, having to work together becomes very difficult,” the President said.<br />
<br />
He, nonetheless, commended the Chiefs for their sense of responsibility, adding “you have shown yourselves to be Chiefs who are responsible for their people and their communities.”<br />
<br />
Continuing, President Akufo-Addo said he was “very encouraged by the offer of the taskforce, that we work together through your community and with the law enforcement agencies to make sure that anybody who wants to misbehave is appropriately dealt with as the law prescribes.”<br />
<br />
The President requested that some of the Chiefs from the Fulani National Council be made part of the Joint Committee, under the Ministry of Agriculture, that is seeing to the establishment of Kraals.<br />
<br />
“This will ensure that we are a co-operative that can go about making sure that, in future, we have peace,” he added.<br />
<br />
On his part, Alhaji Idriss, spokesperson for the Council of Fulani Chiefs, expressed gratitude to the President for the invitation, which, according to them, is the first time any President has met the Chiefs and leadership of Fulanis in Ghana, to deliberate on issues that affect the security of Ghana.<br />
<br />
He expressed worry about the loss of lives and properties in areas where there has been confrontations between Fulanis and the community.<br />
<br />
He said the “continued occurrence and re-occurrence of the confrontations between nomadic herdsmen and crop farmers and other crimes that has been associated with Fulani and the Fulani ethnic groupings is giving us sleepless nights. These activities have portrayed the Fulani in a very negative light, thus, making it look like the Fulani community is in conflict with Mother Ghana. We do not support these blatantly criminal activities”.<br />
<br />
He, however, appreciated the effort thus far by government to ensure peaceful co-existence with Fulanis.<br />
<br />
Concluding, the National Council of Fulani Chiefs pledged to co-operate with Government to ensure peaceful co-existence in Ghana.<br />

According to eye witnesses, a white Saloon car with registration number DV 3082 LA 17 which was over-speeding when heading to Atibie from Nkawkaw and rammed into a tipper truck with registration number GT 4497 V, killing two persons on the spot.</div>

The Minister of State in charge of National Security, Bryan Acheampong has vowed to “wipe out” criminal Fulani herdsmen terrorizing residents at Kwahu East in the Eastern region.<br />
Byran Acheampong said that a joint military and police force has been constituted to undertake the operation.<br />

He revealed this in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Tuesday.<br />

Mr. Acheampong comment follows renewed clashes between Fulani herdsmen and some community members at Dwibease and Hweehwee communities, both in the Kwahu East district.<br />
<br />
The situation has caused fear and panic in the area with residents fleeing from the town to nearby villages to stay with family and friends for the fear of being caught up in the attacks.<br />
<br />
The towns are now empty and the nomadic herdsmen with over 10 thousand cattle taking over their homes.<br />
<br />
But Bryan Acheampong stressed that the situation is sickening and will be stopped with immediate effect.<br />
<br />
He indicated that, due to the situation, seven schools serving 15 communities in the Kwahu East district has been closed down due to what residents say is the danger posed to them by the activities of Fulani herdsmen.<br />
<br />
The Member of Parliament for Abetifi noted that the police has been resourced to provide 24 hour security for towns threatened by the Fulanis.<br />
<br />
He however encouraged indigenes to be “angry at leadership to ensure we sustain the action and clean the place up”.<br />
<br />
Bryan Acheampong who is also the Minister of State in charge of National Security said he has provided every support necessary for the security forces to protect the people in Kwahu East.<br />
<br />
“If a drop blood flows, it will be on the head of security so they have also assured me every footprint of cattle will be wiped out” he stressed.<br />

A Medical doctor at the Kwahu Government Hospital, Dr. Akoto Ampaw, has lamented the number of gunshot cases and subsequent deaths the hospital has been attending to in recent times, following clashes between local residents and some nomadic herdsmen in the area.<br />

About eight people lost their lives with several others sustaining injuries in separate reprisal attacks at Dwibease and Wheewhee communities about a fortnight ago.</div>

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast show on Friday, Dr. Ampaw, who described the situation as very worrying, added that the doctors are usually recalled to the hospital even during their off-days to attend to such cases.</div>

“The situation is very worrying because as medical practitioners we are called to attend to people who have been shot and sometimes people have been attacked with other implements. I can confirm that most of the bodies have been deposited at the hospital. Quite a number of them, I can recall just in the immediate past week, I have had the opportunity to attend to three gunshot injuries in the area.”</div>

“When you see a gunshot injury, you have to be worried to find out whether it is from a miscreant or some other kind of persons. So when we verify that with the police, then we get to know that it is as a result of the clash that is happening in the area. I can remember attending to a local who was shot. Yesterday [Thursday], I even attended to a Fulani who was also shot.”</div>

7 bodies deposited at morgue, more are Fulanis</h4>

He said in the recent incidents, most of the casualties reported at the hospital are mostly the Fulanis, adding that, seven bodies have so far been deposited at the Kwahu Government Hospital’s morgue.</div>

“With regards to the bodies, I think the bigger casualty is from the Fulani side. I can count without any contradiction at least seven bodies that have been deposited in our morgue; and if you see the extent of injury that has been done to the body, even for myself as a medical officer, it is very worrying,” Dr. Ampaw added.</div>

Reason for clash</h4>

The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, in a Citi News interview said some have blamed the reprisal attacks on alleged destruction of farmlands by the cattle belonging to the Fulani herdsmen.</div>

“Reasons for the killings are yet to be known, but with the history between Fulani and residents in Kwahu, it can be linked to the destruction of farmlands by cattle.”</div>

Scores flee communities</h4>

In a related development, there are reports that some residents have fled the communities because of the attacks.</div>

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Security Council is considering a revival of ‘Operation Cow Leg’ to address conflicts between mostly local farmers and nomadic Fulani herdsmen.</div>

As part of the operation, Police and Military will be deployed to patrol the Kwahu enclave to avert clashes.</div>

This approach to fighting the menace in the era of then President Kufuor, has been criticized as not being effective.</div>

According to him, the Police service together with the military will  move the nomads from the community in order to instill peace and tranquility.<br />
<br />
The nomads have been at loggerheads with the locals following the killing of over three people recently in the area. There is an uneasy calm in Kwahu East following the latest development.<br />
<br />
In an interview with Captain Smart on Adom Fm, a Tema based radio station, Mr. Acheampong said<br />
<br />
“I want to use your medium to assure residents and farmers of Kwahu and its environs of their maximum protection and appeal to them to cooperate with the security to achieve lasting peace in the districts and its environs”.<br />
<br />
The Member of Parliament who doubles as a  Minister of state in charge of National Security added<br />
<br />
“So far, we have brought in a number of security officials to start the operation and whatever we need to do to resolve this issue permanently; we will. The security is on red alert to restore calm”.<br />
<br />
<br />
“The immediate solution which starts from today is the sending of more security men. The main objective is for them to contain the nomadic Fulani and drive them away from that area and make sure that they don’t return.”<br />
<br />
The MP said, not a single footprint of a cow will be seen in Kwahu.<br />
